If you’re a homeowner in Newton, Framingham, Wellesley, or anywhere in the Greater Boston area, you already know that New England weather is unpredictable. That makes timing your exterior painting project more important than it might be in other parts of the country. Paint applied in the wrong conditions won’t bond properly, won’t last as long, and can end up costing you more in the long run.
Here’s what you need to know before scheduling your next exterior paint job.
The Ideal Window: Late Spring Through Early Fall
In Massachusetts, the sweet spot for exterior painting is generally late May through October. During this period, temperatures are consistently above 50°F — which is the minimum temperature most exterior paints need to apply and cure properly. Below that threshold, paint becomes too thick, takes much longer to dry, and can crack or peel within a year or two.
Humidity matters just as much as temperature. High humidity — common in Boston summers — slows drying time and can trap moisture under the paint film. We always check the forecast before starting a job and aim for days with humidity below 70% and no rain expected for at least 24 hours after application.
Why Fall Is Often the Best Choice
September and October are actually our favorite months for exterior painting in the MetroWest area. Here’s why:
Temperatures are mild and stable. The humidity drops compared to July and August. Homeowners are often motivated to get the job done before winter. Scheduling is easier than the busy spring rush.
A fresh coat of paint heading into a New England winter also gives your home’s exterior better protection against moisture, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles that can work their way into bare or worn wood.
What About Spring?
Late spring — May into June — is also a great time, with one caveat: it’s our busiest season. If you want a spring paint job, we recommend reaching out in March or April to get on the schedule. Waiting until June often means a July start date at the earliest.
What to Avoid
We strongly advise against exterior painting in November through March in the Greater Boston area. Even on a warm winter day, overnight temperatures can drop well below freezing, which will ruin a fresh coat of paint before it has a chance to cure. It’s simply not worth the risk.
