Why Proper Surface Prep Is the Secret to a Long-Lasting Paint Job

Ask any experienced painter what separates a paint job that looks great for ten years from one that starts peeling in two, and they’ll give you the same answer: preparation.

At Lima Painting, we’ve seen it all — walls painted over dirt and grease, exteriors coated without proper priming, wallpaper removed carelessly leaving torn drywall underneath. In every case, the problem wasn’t the paint. It was what happened — or didn’t happen — before the first brush stroke.

Here’s what proper prep actually looks like, and why it matters so much.

Cleaning the Surface

Paint doesn’t stick well to dirty surfaces. For exterior projects, that means power washing the entire surface to remove dirt, mildew, chalking paint, and any other contaminants. For interior work, walls need to be wiped down, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where grease and moisture build up over time.

Skipping this step is one of the most common shortcuts taken by inexperienced painters, and it almost always shows within a year or two.

Scraping and Sanding

Any loose, flaking, or peeling paint has to come off before new paint goes on. If you paint over it, you’re just giving the old peeling paint something new to pull away from. On older homes — especially those built before 1978 — this step also requires care around lead paint, which is why working with a licensed, insured contractor matters.

After scraping, surfaces are sanded smooth so the new paint has a uniform surface to bond to. This is especially important on trim and woodwork where imperfections are highly visible.

Patching and Filling

Nail holes, cracks, dents, and gouges all need to be filled and sanded flush before painting. On exteriors, gaps around windows, doors, and trim should be re-caulked to keep moisture out. This isn’t just cosmetic — it’s about protecting the structure of your home.

Priming

Primer is not optional. It seals the surface, improves adhesion, and ensures the topcoat color goes on evenly. On bare wood, drywall, or any heavily patched area, skipping primer almost guarantees uneven coverage and premature failure. We use the right primer for each surface type — there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

The Lima Painting Approach

We never rush the prep work. In our experience, prep takes as long as — or longer than — the actual painting. That’s just the reality of doing the job right. When you hire Lima Painting for your home in Newton, Framingham, Brookline, or anywhere in Greater Boston, you’re getting a team that treats prep as seriously as the finish coat.
